Eurotrip Review:
At my age, I probably shouldn't have enjoyed Eurotrip as much as I did. I'm certainly not its target demographic but, apparently, I'm still young at heart enough to appreciate its sense of lowbrow humor.
Alternating between hilarity and stupidity, Eurotrip is American Pie with a passport as 4 friends embark on a trip across Europe with the purpose of uniting one of them with his hot German Internet tutor. What follows are a series of wacky adventures reminiscent of Road Trip, including a run in with a group of rowdy soccer hooligans, a creepy encounter with a lecherous Italian on a train, a hilarious showdown with a French robot', and a penetrating moment in an Amsterdam sex club. While much of the humor is aimed at the lowest common denominator, there were a few clever moments that peaked my laugh meter including Scott Mechlowisz's pop and lock fight' with the human robot, a segment on a nude beach that finds the guys in the middle of the worlds largest sausage fest', and the song detailing Scott's breakup with his girlfriend a tune that becomes a running gag throughout the film.
Eurotrip features a cast of mostly unknowns and each does fairly nice work. This isn't Shakespeare and none of the cast has to stretch too far to identify with their characters, but they are charming and likeable if not quite as charismatic as the American Pie crew. Mechlowisz's Scott is a guy you can root for as he sheds his predictability and travels halfway around the globe in search of what may turn out to be his one true love. The requisite part of smart-a$$ best friend belongs to Jacob Pitts, who provides plenty of comic relief as his devil may care attitude sets up several mishaps. Michelle Trachtenberg is all grown up and a delightful presence as the hot young girl the rest of the group still sees as one of the guys.
The downfall of this film for me lies within its insulting stereotypes. There isn't a single nationality in this film presented in a positive light and the script skewers them in the most humiliating of ways. Which might be forgivable if it were funny, but many of the jokes are simply offensive. Just one example of humor crossing over into bad taste is a scene in which a young German child draws a mustache on his upper lip and then proceeds to march like a Nazi in the background. It is a moment completely unnecessary to the scene and amounts to nothing more than a mean-spirited jab.
Eurotrip is now out on DVD in rated and unrated versions, 1.85:1 widescreen, and 5.1 Dolby Digital. The disc is packed with bonus features including full length feature commentary from director Schaffer and the producers; a handful of deleted scenes, some of which are funnier than the stuff they left in; a making of featurette; gag reel; a behind the scenes look at the nude beach scene which subjects viewers to yet another helping of franks and beans; a featurette profiling the music used in the film; cast and crew bios; production notes; and a feature in which the filmmakers bootleg a bootleg of their film by showing the actual footage someone shot on a hand-held video camera at one of the film's premiere's it's a vindicating moment with the trio introducing the footage with a hearty F-you to the bootlegger. Also included on the unrated version, to the delighted cheers of perverts everywhere, are a pair of indexes that take you right to the nude or unrated scenes, taking all the guesswork out of figuring out where to find your favorite pair of perky (insert clever slang term here).

Eurotrip has all the crude humor, lewd acts, and nudity one would expect from a film produced by the same guys who brought us Road Trip and Old School. But, it also has a certain sort of sweetness and charm, and a few moments of hilariousness, that make it a rather enjoyable watch.
